For some, his advice on assimilation is as easy as it sounds. For others, coming to Canada has meant a new chapter of grief and anxiety. Between 1988 and 1996, 55,000 Somalis emigrated to Canada, the largest black immigrant group to come to the country at one time. Most were refugees fleeing the civil wars that killed close to a million in their homeland. Single mothers especially found Canada was not the haven they were hoping for. Howa Mohamed, a Somali mother of five, puts it like this: We thought we were safe here in Canada: thank God, no bullets. But we didnt know there would be another war here, we didnt expect it. It was so tragic, we didnt know what was going on. In May, Mohamed lost her 26 year old nephew, Mohamed Jama Ali, when he was fatally shot in the stomach in what appeared to be gang violence. She has had nightmares ever since. I participated in bringing him here from Somalia.

Some would broaden the category to include such megacities as So Paulo, Mexico City, and Mumbai Bombay. Interconnected with the world cities are a few dozen major cities that occupy the next level of the pyramid. These populous and influential urban centers include Rio de Janeiro; Johannesburg, South Africa; Seoul, South Korea; Hong Kong; Miami, Florida; Los Angeles; Berlin; Paris; Frankfurt, Germany; and Milan, Italy. Occupying successively lower levels of the pyramid are large cities of regional or national importance, such as Lagos, Nigeria, and Kuwait City, and large or medium sized provincial centers, which may be important at the local and national levels because of their factories, government services, or transportation links. At the lowest tier in the global hierarchy are small cities and towns acting as bedroom community suburbs or as service centers for rural agricultural and mining areas. Most cities develop gradually from villages and towns as trading markets, university centers, or places of worship. They are generally built in locations that somehow aid them on local, national, and international scales. Such locations make a city more efficient in some way or in many ways, generally by giving it access to natural resources, trade connections, government services, or other advantages. Cities must, of course, have adequate water and food supplies. Therefore many have been located adjacent to rivers and lakes, and most have been near productive agricultural areas. Rivers in particular have proven vital as sources of freshwater and as an inexpensive means of disposing of sewage despite ecological damage downstream.

The lack of jobs and the lack of good jobs are causing this shift in our economy. The excerpts in this paper are a representative sample of the majority opinion that is the 99%. Joblessness affects ones wealth, affecting her place in society, which then places her among the 99% or the 1%. Jobs, or lack thereof, determine where we lie among the gap between the rich and poor. We have looked at the corpus both quantitatively and qualitatively and have found that the issues of joblessness, money, and income are often coded simultaneously with the classifications labeled. Through corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis, we were able to find out more about how text can both create and reproduces meanings about social categories in our society. We were able to see that social categories are defined by economic conditions and what kind of social schemas are associated with different social groups the rich or the poor in these texts. The analysis also gave us a deep look into the power relations between the social classes in the context of the Occupy Movement. The relation of power has provided a broad picture of how the media has actually emphasized the gap between classes and between the notation of the rich and the poor. On one hand, power is obviously given to the dominant group the rich, while on the other hand, the media has also been disempowering the dominant group by critique for the purpose of empowering the other group the poor, as this is also centric to the goal of the Occupy movement, to fight for equality between the classes, or between the rich and the poor.
